Most drownings are preventable through good boating safety habits. Here are 15 tips to always keep in mind.
- Always wear a properly fitted lifejacket
- Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Check the weather forecast.
- Inform someone of your planned route and when you expect to return.
- Closely supervise children at all times.
- Take a safe boating course.
- Take a First Aid and CPR course.
- Never stand in a small powerboat, canoe or other similar watercraft.
- Do not overload your boat with passengers or gear.
- Be courteous of others using the waterways and obey all boating rules.
- Be watchful of swimmers and other boaters.
- Always use a spotter for water-skiers and tube riders.
- When towing a boat, lower and secure the mast.
- Look for and avoid overhead power lines while launching.
- Maintain a safe distance from hydroelectric dams and stations.
