Most drownings are preventable through good boating safety habits. Here are 15 tips to always keep in mind.
  1. Always wear a properly fitted lifejacket
  2. Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  3. Check the weather forecast.
  4. Inform someone of your planned route and when you expect to return.
  5. Closely supervise children at all times.
  6. Take a safe boating course.
  7. Take a First Aid and CPR course.
  8. Never stand in a small powerboat, canoe or other similar watercraft.
  9. Do not overload your boat with passengers or gear.
  10. Be courteous of others using the waterways and obey all boating rules.
  11. Be watchful of swimmers and other boaters.
  12. Always use a spotter for water-skiers and tube riders.
  13. When towing a boat, lower and secure the mast.
  14. Look for and avoid overhead power lines while launching.
  15. Maintain a safe distance from hydroelectric dams and stations.
