CAMPING

Camping is a safe and fun activity. To keep it that way, it's important to take time to plan ahead. Here's 11 easy tips you can use before you tent up.
  1. Bring emergency supplies such as a map, compass, flashlight, knife, waterproof fire starter, whistle and warm clothing.
  2. Check the weather forecast for the area.
  3. Arrive at your campsite with enough daylight to check it over and to setup camp.
  4. Check for potential hazard such as glass, sharp objects, branches, ant beds, poison ivy, bees and hazardous terrain.
  5. Pack a first aid kit that includes antiseptic, bandages, tweezers, insect repellent, pain relievers and sunscreen.
  6. Fires and fuel-burning appliances must be far enough away from the tent to prevent ignition from sparks, flames and heat.
  7. Keep campfires small, with water nearby, and never leave them unattended.
  8. Be cautious when using propane stoves. Read instructions carefully and use only as a cooking appliance.
  9. Ward off wildlife by placing food in animal proof containers. Do not leave garbage, coolers or cooking equipment around the site.
  10. Inform someone of your planned camp site and when you expect to return.
  11. If towing a trailer, ensure it is properly hitched, that tail and brake lights work properly, and always follow the posted speed limit.
