CAMPING
Camping is a safe and fun activity. To keep it that way, it's important to take time to plan ahead. Here's 11 easy tips you can use before you tent up.
- Bring emergency supplies such as a map, compass, flashlight, knife, waterproof fire starter, whistle and warm clothing.
- Check the weather forecast for the area.
- Arrive at your campsite with enough daylight to check it over and to setup camp.
- Check for potential hazard such as glass, sharp objects, branches, ant beds, poison ivy, bees and hazardous terrain.
- Pack a first aid kit that includes antiseptic, bandages, tweezers, insect repellent, pain relievers and sunscreen.
- Fires and fuel-burning appliances must be far enough away from the tent to prevent ignition from sparks, flames and heat.
- Keep campfires small, with water nearby, and never leave them unattended.
- Be cautious when using propane stoves. Read instructions carefully and use only as a cooking appliance.
- Ward off wildlife by placing food in animal proof containers. Do not leave garbage, coolers or cooking equipment around the site.
- Inform someone of your planned camp site and when you expect to return.
- If towing a trailer, ensure it is properly hitched, that tail and brake lights work properly, and always follow the posted speed limit.
