As summer arrives people are heading to the pool, beach or river for a refreshing dip. Before you take the plunge, take a moment to think about these 10 water safety tips.
- Be aware of your limitations. Don't swim beyond your ability.
- When swimming in the ocean, be aware of the tides and currents and keep an eye on the shifting weather patterns.
- Know the signs of hypothermia.
- Supervise children at all times even in hot tubs.
- Fence backyard pools and ensure gates have self-locking latches.
- Keep emergency equipment and first aid kits close at hand.
- Never dive into above ground pools.
- Never dive where you are unsure of water depth or bottom conditions.
- When diving, ensure water depth is at least 10 feet for the entire path of the dive, and that no rocks or debris are in the way.
- Never enter water around dykes, dams or hydroelectric equipment.
